BASF's domestic lithium-ion battery material production capacity will be expanded to 100,000 tons

Last year, BASF entered the Chinese lithium-ion battery market by acquiring an equity interest in Hunan Shanshan Energy.

BASF will expand its cathode material production capacity in China.

On June 15, BASF announced that its holding subsidiary, BASF Shanshan Battery Material Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as BASF Shanshan), is expanding the production line of lithium-ion battery cathode materials.

The new production line, located at BASF Shanshan's production sites in Hunan and Ningxia, is scheduled to be put into operation in the fourth quarter of this year, and BASF's cathode material production capacity in China will be increased to 100,000 tons per year.

The new production line will manufacture nickel,cobalt-manganese ternary cathode materials, including different types of high nickel, ultra-high nickel, and manganese-rich.

BASF revealed that the company's manganese-rich ternary cathode material has achieved tonnage-scale production. Peter Schumacher, president of the company's catalyst business unit, said that compared with cobalt and nickel, which have recently risen sharply in price, manganese resources are abundant, and manganese-rich products can achieve a better balance in terms of cost-effectiveness.

BASF is currently the world's largest supplier of automotive chemicals, offering products including coatings and high-performance plastics. In 2012, BASF established the Battery Materials Business Unit, headquartered in Shanghai, focusing on cathode materials.

According to BASF's calculations, cathode materials contribute about 40% of the manufacturing cost of batteries for new energy vehicles. By 2030, the global demand for cathode materials will exceed 2.5 million tons, and the market size will be between 55 billion and 70 billion euros (about 420.3 billion to 535 billion yuan).

In August last year, BASF announced the completion of the acquisition of a 51% stake in Hunan Shanshan Energy and renamed it BASF Shanshan. 600884.SH holds a 49% stake in BASF Shanshan and is the second largest shareholder of the company.

Since 2015, BASF has established battery cathode material production sites in Japan, the United States and Europe. Among them, the production base in Japan is a joint venture between BASF and Toda Kogyo of Japan, while the cathode materials plants in the United States and Europe are currently wholly owned by BASF.

Entering the Chinese market by acquiring the equity of Hunan Shanshan Energy has added an important piece of the puzzle for BASF's global layout of battery materials.

BASF Shanshan's main products are lithium cobalt oxide and ternary materials, lithium cobalt oxide is mainly used in consumer electronic products (3C) lithium-ion battery cathode materials, while ternary materials are mainly used to manufacture new energy vehicle batteries. Last year, BASF Shanshan had revenue of CNY 6.2 billion and net profit of CNY 490 million.
