This huge operating base in Europe will enable Tesla to strengthen its presence on this side of the Atlantic, which will help it achieve its global sales target of 1.3 million vehicles.
With the start of production in Europe in December, Tesla’s plant in Greenheide (located in Germany, less than an hour’s drive from Berlin) is expected to achieve a weekly output of 1,000 Model Y vehicles in January next year. This is the current plant. The only model planned to be produced.
At present, due to the lack of the final official permit from the German government, the plant is in a slow-running state. The current work team consists of about 2,000 people, but according to Tesla, it needs to increase the number to 12,000 to achieve its maximum effectiveness.
According to the person in charge of the brand, finding qualified personnel in a highly competitive market like Germany will be an additional difficulty for them to complete the plan. This is an ambitious start because the goal of this new Tesla Gigafactory is to produce 500,000 vehicles per year.
However, it will take time to reach this number. It is not easy for Tesla to land in Europe. It had planned to start assembling cars in the early summer, but various difficulties appeared, which caused the delay of the scheduled plan.
On the one hand, it encountered opposition from local authorities and environmental organizations because of the possible use and pollution of water resources by the factory. There is a lot of potable water underground in the Greenhead area where the factory is located.
On the other hand, the time required for the government authorization was longer than expected, and delayed the start of the production line and its launch ceremony.
