September Global Lithium-ion Power Battery Ranking: Lishen climbed to Top 10, CALB close to Samsung SDI

In September, the CATL was invincible and firmly ranked as the champion, but its market share dropped by 1.9 percentage points from the previous month. Panasonic's installed capacity rose by over 50% month-on-month, and once again widened the gap with BYD. If BYD wants to surpass Panasonic within the year, it will depend on its market performance in Q4.

Following the SVOLT, the TOP10 global power battery market in September has broken into a "dark horse"-Lishen Battery. The installed capacity of CALB's lithium-ion battery is further approaching Panasonic and is expected to rank sixth in the world.

According to data from SNE Research, a South Korean market research organization, in September, the global installed capacity of power batteries was 32.9GWh, an increase of 30.6% from the previous month. From January to September, the global installed capacity of power batteries was 195.4GWh, an increase of 20.6% month-on-month.

In September, CATL continued to dominate the rankings, with LG and Panasonic still ranking second and third respectively. BYD, which approached Panasonic in August, opened a gap with Panasonic in September and ranked fourth; SKI, Samsung SDI, CALB Lithium, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Lishen, and Vision AESC were among the top ten.

It is worth mentioning that Lishen Battery topped the list and ranked ninth on the list, while SVOLT, which was on the list for the first time in August, fell off the list.

From a year-on-year perspective, CATL, LG, BYD, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, and Lishen all achieved triple-digit growth year-on-year, and SK, SDI, and CALB lithium battery achieved double-digit growth. Only Vision AESC experienced negative growth year-on-year.

In terms of month-on-month growth, except for Guoxuan High-Tech and AESC, all companies achieved double-digit growth, especially Panasonic's September month-on-month increase of 53.6%, followed by LG's month-on-month growth of 44.4%.

Specifically, in September, CATL installed 10.6GWh, an increase of 23.3% from the previous month. The surge in installed capacity is due to the sales of Tesla, Hongguang MINI EV, GAC Aeon, and Benben E-Star models.

BYD's installed capacity was 2.9GWh, an increase of 16% from the previous month, ranking fourth. As Panasonic's September installed capacity rose by over 50% month-on-month, the gap between BYD and Panasonic has widened again.

The installed capacity of CALB's lithium battery was 0.9GWh, an increase of 28.6% month-on-month, ranking seventh. Guoxuan Hi-Tech's installed capacity is 0.7GWh, the same as August's installed capacity, ranking eighth. In the Chinese market, Guoxuan Hi-Tech ranks third, and CALB Lithium Potential ranks fourth.

Following the dark horse of "SVOLT", the TOP10 global power battery market in September broke into another "dark horse"-Lishen Battery.

This veteran state-owned joint-stock company that was established in 1997 has not been dominated by companies like CATL and BYD. After 25 years, Lishen Battery finally ranks among the top ten in the international power battery field and can finally dominate the headlines.

In addition to expanding the Chinese market, Lishen Battery is also constantly exploring the international market, cooperating with international car companies such as Volkswagen and Daimler in the power battery business, and becoming a special power battery supplier for the BBG project of EGT NEV, the new energy joint venture car company established by the Renault-Nissan.

In order to cope with the market demand in the next few years, Lishen Battery already has multiple bases in Tianjin, Qingdao, Suzhou, etc. in terms of production capacity. Currently, it has a production capacity of 14GWh. The company plans to form a production capacity of 30GWh by 2020.

The installed capacity of Envision AESC was 0.3GWh, which was the same as that of August, ranking tenth. At present, Envision Power has built six power battery production bases in France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, China and other places, with a total planned production capacity of over 140GWh.

LG's installed capacity was 7.8GWh, a year-on-year increase of 110.8% and a month-on-month increase of 44.4%. The surge in installed capacity is due to the hot sales of Tesla China Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, etc.

In addition, Hyundai, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche, Volvo, GM, Chrysler, Renault, etc. all have cooperation with them.

SKI installed capacity was 1.7GWh, a year-on-year increase of 54.3% and a month-on-month increase of 21.4%. Best-selling models such as Kia EV, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Hyundai Kona EV (Europe), Mercedes-Benz GLE PHEV, etc., have driven their installed capacity soaring.

The installed capacity of Samsung SDI was 1GWh, a year-on-year increase of 25% and a month-on-month increase of 11.1%. The sales of its supporting Fiat 500, Audi E-tron EV, SEAT leon PHEV and other models increased, but the sales of Volkswagen e-Golf plummeted, which offset the overall increase in its installed capacity.

Panasonic installed 4.3GWh in September, a year-on-year increase of 2.4% and a month-on-month increase of 53.6%. At present, Panasonic has battery plants in Japan, China and the United States. Among them, the U.S. super factory has an existing capacity of 35GWh and is planning to further expand or increase it to 54GWh. In addition, Panasonic also plans to enter Europe and establish its first battery plant in Norway with a production capacity of about 38GWh. It is estimated that by 2025, Panasonic's total production capacity will reach 160GWh.

From January to September, the global installed capacity of power batteries was 195.4GWh, up 20.6% month-on-month and 128% year-on-year. The world's top ten power battery companies have installed capacity of 182.8GWh, with a market share of 93.6%, and market concentration has further increased. Among them, CATL, LG, Panasonic, BYD, and SKI are firmly in the top five.
CATL, BYD, CALB, and Guoxuan High-Tech have all achieved triple-digit growth year-on-year, and the growth rate is much higher than the market average, but BYD’s market share has dropped by 1 percentage point to 7.9%. Panasonic and PEVE achieved double-digit growth year-on-year, and the market share of both declined.

LG and SKI grew by more than 120% year-on-year, and Samsung SDI achieved double-digit growth year-on-year. Its market share dropped from 6.1% last year to 4.6% this year.

Chinese companies headed by the "Lithium King" CATL continue to lead the rapid growth of the global power battery market. In September, the Chinese company "Lishen" battery climbed to Global Top 10 for the first time, while SVOLT dropped out of the list. CALB is close to Samsung SDI, and its installed capacity is only 0.1 GWh less. It is expected to surpass the latter and become the sixth in the list within this year.
