I. Q3 Financial Snapshot
The 2026 Q1-Q3 financial results of listed anode material companies show clear divergence. Revenue rose broadly across the board: leading players maintained large revenue bases while second-tier manufacturers delivered strong growth rates. Profitability, however, was mixed. The gap between in-house graphitization capacity and outsourced graphitization costs became a core factor weighing on earnings. Overall, the industry features two distinct tiers:
Price-beneficiary Tier: Putailai, Shangtai Technology, Shanshan Co., Ltd. These firms boast high self-sufficiency rates for graphitization. All registered sharp year-on-year growth in Q3 net profit. Putailai’s quarterly gross margin jumped 5.7 percentage points quarter-on-quarter, successfully monetizing the price uptick.
Recovery-under-pressure Tier: BTR, Zhongke Electric, Xiangfenghua Revenue grew robustly, yet profitability remained under pressure. BTR’s Jan–Sep net profit still fell 20% year-on-year (though Q3 net profit turned positive YoY, with non-recurring adjusted profit up 22% QoQ). High outsourced graphitization costs dragged down Zhongke Electric’s net profit. Xiangfenghua achieved marginal profit improvement, yet non-recurring gains inflated its headline growth rate.

II. Industry Outlook: Clear Opportunities, Yet Three Major Hurdles Remain
Judging from the Q3 reports, anode makers posted solid revenue growth, but a full earnings recovery is not yet in sight. The sector still faces three core challenges:
- Graphitization self-sufficiency dictates profit elasticity. The contrast between Putailai’s +5.7pct QoQ margin gain and Xiangfenghua’s -2.5pct decline illustrates that price gains are redistributed according to self-sufficiency. Vertically integrated producers capture profits, while players relying on outsourcing bear rising costs.
- Sustainability of price increases. Mid-to-low end artificial graphite prices have climbed since August, and leading makers have rolled out price adjustments. Whether these hikes can cover rising coke feedstock costs and pass smoothly downstream hinges on battery production schedules in Q4 and downstream acceptance. Based on October and November battery run-rate data to date, the upward momentum is unlikely to be sustained.
- The race between cash flow and capacity expansion. Shangtai, Zhongke Electric and BTR reported negative operating cash flows in the first three quarters. A new wave of capacity projects (Shanxi Phase IV, Sichuan Zichen Phase II, Malaysia base, etc.) is scheduled to come online from end-2026 through H1 2027. The combination of improving income statements alongside cash burn cannot persist long-term. Companies that turn operating cash flow positive first will gain the upper hand in the next capacity expansion cycle.
III. Conclusion: Anode Firms Accelerate Integration; Profit Recovery for Artificial Graphite Has Only Just Begun
The Q3 2026 results for artificial graphite paint a picture of certain volume growth but stratified profitability. All six tracked companies grew revenue and shipments hit fresh highs; four delivered sequential single-quarter net profit improvement, confirming the direction of price realization. Even so, many pain points persist: revenue growth without profit growth, negative operating cash flow, and sequential margin declines for most players. For now, the benefits of price increases are limited to producers with the highest graphitization self-sufficiency.
A shakeout lies ahead for artificial graphite. Differences in graphitization self-sufficiency, cost control and customer mix will widen gaps between peers. As the dominant anode route with high certainty, integrated leaders are strengthening their cost moat through this cycle. The real competition in the anode sector is only starting.
Risks
Battery production schedules for October and November are below expectations. In the short run, the rally in graphitization processing fees may reverse or peak in Q4. High-self-sufficiency manufacturers will face compressed profit elasticity, meaning Q3 margin improvements may not prove sustainable.
Anode run-rates in Oct–Nov are less affected by battery production adjustments. However, if downstream demand disappoints in Q1 and Q2 next year — if power and energy storage battery schedules are cut on weaker EV sales and slower storage tendering — artificial graphite shipment growth will come under pressure, and cash flow gaps for highly capital-intensive producers will widen further.
Raw material price volatility risk: Sharp increases in needle coke, petroleum coke and other feedstock prices that cannot be passed downstream will squeeze thin processing margins. That said, substantial near-term raw material price spikes are not expected.
