Needle coke market was stable in May. Overall shipment of needle coke enterprises was not bad. There is a high inventory level of enterprises. Furthermore, there is uncertainty in export situation. From January to April, total graphite electrode export volume was 98800MT, Y-O-Y down 4.91%.
From the side of needle coke downstream, anode material was stable and graphite market was bad. ICCSINO estimates that there is downward trend in needle coke price, whereas price downward rend is very small. It’s estimated that needle coke enterprises would cut production to reach market stability. We forecast that there might be needle coke procurement shortage in October.
In terms of domestic price, as of 29th May, Chinese coal-based needle coke was 5000-7000 yuan/MT. Oil -based needle coke price was 6500-7500yuan/MT. Uncalcined coke was 4500-6500 yuan/MT. For imported needle coke, coal-based needle coke was 680-1300 USD/MT, Oil-based needle coke was 1500-1800 USD/MT, Needle coke on anode was 1000-1200 USD/MT.
According to import and export data, total coal-based needle coke import volume was 17800MT from January to April, Y-O-Y down 23.8%. Total oil-based needle coke import volume was 23900MT, Y-O-Y down 44.85%. From the perspective of export situation, Chinese total oil-based needle coke was 7600MT, Y-O-Y down 56.55%. The export volume of bonded warehouse is 5339 MT. Based on import situation, ICCSINO forecasts that there would be adjustment in imported needle coke, with 10%-12% price downward.
Operation of needle coke enterprises and project progress in May
Wuhai Baohua Wanchen Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. completed the installation of the phase tower of the 50,000-ton needle coke project, marking the shift from civil construction to equipment installation. The project is expected to achieve a thermal load test run by the end of August. The 50,000-ton needle coke project is the first phase of the carbon material integration project of Wuhai Baohua Wanchen Coal Chemical Co., Ltd., and construction began on March 15, 2019, with an estimated construction period of 18 months. After the project is completed, it will reach the annual production capacity of 30,000 tons of needle coke raw coke and 30,000 tons of needle coke cooked coke.
Since Fang Daxi Kemo resumed construction in late March of this year, production has continued until the end of April, and the factory's routine maintenance plan starts from early May to end in mid-June. Up to now, the total output is about 7000 tons.
The first phase of Jinzhou Petrochemical Needle Coke is undergoing a 10-day technical renovation. It is expected to be completed and put into operation in early June. The second-phase production line is currently operating at low load, and the current inventory of the plant is about 3,000 tons.
Ansteel's chemical needle coke production line is still under maintenance. Up to now, the inventory is around 1,000 tons. The mainstream market price is 5000-5500 yuan / ton (cooked coke); 4000-4200 yuan / ton (green coke).
Both sets of Jingyang Science and Technology oil needle coke production lines are under full load. From January to April, the total export volume of Jingyang Science and Technology needle coke is about 7595 tons, accounting for 100% of China's needle coke exports.
According to the latest news from Sinopec, the oil-based needle coke project is currently progressing smoothly. The Jinling Petrochemical 150,000 needle coke green coke project is expected to be completed and put into production in 2020; Maoming Petrochemical 120,000-ton calcined needle coke project is expected to be in 2020 It was completed and put into production in December.
The first phase of the 100,000-ton needle coke project of Tangshan Shandong Rixin Energy Co., Ltd. is currently completed with the basic construction of the needle coke device, and the production line equipment is commissioned in an orderly manner. It is expected that coke will be born in early August.
