Chinacarbon News: In May, petroleum coke market prices were in active volition. In early May, petroleum coke shipment posted relatively favorable performance and overall market kept stable as aluminum smelters, carbon plants in the downstream started to make purchases for May delivery. Prices released by Sinopec and PetroChina remained stable. In middle May, domestic high-sulphur coke remained in oversupply, while shipments of middle-sulphur petroleum coke in Northeast areas reported favorable performance due to firm demands from carbon plants in the region, causing slight increase in price. In late May, along with reoperation of coking facilities at Daqing and Jinzhou Petrochemical, the supply of low-sulphur petroleum coke started to become loose gradually, with Daqing Petrochemical’s petroleum coke price slipping by 150 yuan/mt. At the end of May, Sinopec increased petroleum coke prices by 20-60 yuan/mt at a very small handful of its refineries, which only has a very limited effect on the overall market where PetroChina, CNOOC and local refineries all remained stable. Amid uncertainties in European economy and unfavorable performance in refined oil products, operating rate of local refinery coking facilities dropped by 16.33% to 54.57% from May 1. Currently, 2# petroleum coke from Shandong local refineries is traded at 1,450-1,500 yuan/mt, 2#B petroleum coke 1,400 yuan/mt, 3# petroleum coke 1,300-1,380 yuan/mt, high-sulphur petroleum coke 1,180-1,220 yuan/mt, high-ash coke 1,000 yuan/mt. Sinopec’s 2#A petroleum coke is 1,700-1,800 yuan/mt, 2#B petroleum coke 1,600-1,650 yuan/mt, 3# petroleum coke 1,400-1,520 yuan/mt, 4#-5# petroleum coke is 1,270-1,320 yuan/mt at high end and 1,100-1,220 yuan/mt at mainstream level, and 1,000-1,040 yuan/mt at low end.
