ICC News: Needle coke market performed steady this month. On the side of units with main business in needle coke, Hongte Chemical and Jinzhou Petrochemical report operation at regular pace, with prices standing at 10,000 yuan/mt and 9,000 yuan/mt respectively. In the overseas market, Conocophillips claimed current needle coke import price has dropped to hnp1850 US dollars or hsp1950 US dollars. On the downstream side, due to protracted sluggishness at domestic graphite electrode enterprises and their reluctant purchases for raw materials, combined with high needle coke contract prices throughout 2012, many enterprises in the country still haven’t completely fulfilled needle coke contracts with overseas partners till now, while needle coke prices are in fact in downward trend.
Customs statistics showed China’s petroleum-based needle coke imports in Feb 2013 totaled 2,528 tons, down 62.10 percent month-on-month from January. Major import sources are US, Japan and German. China’s coal-based needle coke (pitch coke) import volume totaled 5,709 tons, down by 31.91 percent month-on-month compared to January. Major import source is Japan.
